Changing a business name is more involved than picking something you like and putting it on a sign. To make a new business name official, there are state rules and processes to follow.  

1.) Choose a new business name

Every state has its own requirements for business names. In New Mexico, the name of an LLC or corporation must:

• Be distinguishable from and not confusingly similar to the name of another company on record 
• Include the relevant word or abbreviation for the type of business (e.g., corporation, Inc., limited liability company, LLC, etc.)

2.) Gather information for filing your amendment

To file Articles of Amendment for your limited liability company or corporation, you need specific information about your business. Typically some or all of the following information is required to file the amendment:

• The business ID number
• The business name
• Any “doing business as” (DBA) names
• The date the original Articles of Organization (for LLCs) or Articles of Incorporation (for corporations) were filed
• The new business name
• How the amendment was adopted (e.g., by a board resolution or a majority vote of the shareholders)
• The signature of the authorized person

The Articles of Amendment must include the appropriate filing fee and a completed Document Delivery Instruction Form. 

3.) File your New Mexico amendment

The Secretary of State accepts amendment filings by mail, in person, or online. You can pay the filing fee with a credit card, money order, or check.
